Classes and Training

One Day License Class & Exam

The class is a guided study session, with demonstrations, opportunities to get answers to your questions, and ending with an exam session.

The exam is comprised of 35-question multiple choice questions, drawn from a published pool of 400+ possible questions, a few chosen from each of ten groups. Most of the questions are about rules, regulations and operating practices. The rest are about technical topics. The following paragraphs describe the classes we hold in person, but the format is the same for online classes, except we meet on Zoom. Follow-on classes will also be held on-line, but exam sessions will not be part of the follow-on classes.

Licensing Class – at Juan Batista de Anza Park
Every hour, we will do a 15 minute lecture on each of these topics: Ohm’s Law, Power, Frequency vs. Wavelength, Decibels, Transistors, Schematic Diagrams and Components, and Repeaters. The rest of the time, you’ll read the Questions and Right Answers and other study aids. The class runs from 9 am to 3 pm, with the exam at 3 pm.

We bring in an independent exam team to administer the exam. The exam fee is invoiced separately from the class. The exam team might decide, if there is time, to offer re-testing, in which case there is a $10 exam fee to take another test. Exams are graded immediately and everyone should have their results by 4 pm.

NOW THAT YOU HAVE YOUR LICENSE – WHAT’S NEXT?

What’s a Radio? – free training, open to the community, at the Juan Batista de Anza park, 2 weeks after the licensing class:

This training is 3 hours, 9 am to noon, and features lots of show-and-tell with actual radio equipment and brochures. This is where we teach you about ham radio and what you can do with your license. It’s really about what radios do. We’ll cover mobile and base radios and accessories, such as power supplies, antennas, battery power and headsets.
